The Wevand is a living biomass that exists off of the coast of eastern Norr-land. It spans from the north to the south of the island and takes on a purple hue.
Initial contact was made by a deep sea diver by the name of Devin. He was sent on an expidition to the bottom of the sea floor due to unusual heat patterns warming the waters to tempertures unheard of in this arctic region. At a depth of around 5500~ meters nearing the hadal zone, temperatures were recorded to be around 24 degrees celcius or around 75 degrees farenheight. Approaching the bottom lead Devin to find a thick, deep purple substance with a similar texture to algae smothering the seafloor. Multiple cracks were scattered across the mass glowing a magentish light that stood out amongst the everlooming darkness. At various points tentacles sprouted from the mass and shot upwards in a pillar like fashion, extending up to tens of meters. Upon touching one, the mass reacted violently and grabbed a hold of Devin in one swift motion. Yanking him down with such force equivalent to the water pressure that surrounded them. Devin had a specialized suit that could withstand the pressure, but even then it seems as if he couldnt escape it. Multiple eyes started opening around the area and frantically looked about until they locked onto Devin, staring without blinking, pulsating rapidly. The grip of the mass began to puncture the specialized suit, but before the pressure could crush Devin, the mass replaced the holes with its own flesh at near impossible speeds. As the mass covered his goggles, eyes began to open and look in, providing a blinding lavender light that disoriented Devin. The encounter was short however, as the mass quickly covered Devins entire suit, and began to ascend; bringing him up 5,500~ meters in roughly 120~ minutes. He was then released from its grip within 6 meters of the surface, and a rescue team was there waiting. As to why the now dubbed "Wevand" decided to let Devin go, is unknown. It is also of note that the creature accounted for decompression surfacing, allowing Devins body to adjust to the intaken nitrogen gas. We believe that otherwise, without accounting for decompression; his ascent wouldve been very quick. The Wevand descended at a rate of about 9 meters a second upon releasing Devin.
On the few times The Wevand had been studied, the biomass has showed multiple strange behaviors.
The Wevand feeds via large tentacles that protroud out from its surface at around 10-16 meters on average, having the longest recorded to be 32 meters with a 9 meter diameter. Once contact has been made with a tentacle, the tentacle will violentley jerk itself towards the conactee. If the arm is too wide and large to move quickly, then part of the arm will detach and reach out instead.
This arm will then proceed to draw energy and mass towards its captured prey, and surround it in the deep purple biomass within seconds. What happens next is unknown to us, but we assume absorption in some way. Devin's case seems to be an anomoly.
The Wevand emits a low frequency that seems to act as an echolocator to the Wevand, allowing it to map out nearby terrain and potential anomolies. This frequency is consistent all around the biome, but is most prominent in the outskirts, pillars, and cracks of the biome. The frequency often times lures other bethnic and hadal animals to the pillars, at which it can feed.
The Wevand has immense influence on the temperature of the region, and usually keeps it at a warm 22-25 degrees celcius on average. The coldest is usually during the winter. Its speculated that the Wevand conserves its energy during the colder months to keep itself warm.
The Wevand being a biome holds some very special and unique organisms within its region. Relatively warm temperatures constantly spread across such a large area combined with immense pressure, leads to very unique lifeforms and organisms to prosper. There is approximately 17~ known species roaming the Wevand that have called it their home
